at first i thought “wow, this is a really bad romantic relationship”, but i can see this describing relationships of all kinds; siblings, parent/child, boss/supervisor, etc

That’s exactly right. It’s about the idea of one person’s blessing being another’s curse, and this exists in all kinds of relationships. There’s always some kind of push and pull. You completely get this!
