a wall at the edge of my mind
my eyes said not to put it there
well, don’t believe your eyes
what is this, anyway?
is the wall to keep them out
or to keep me, the recalcitrant, in?
well, i don’t care about walls
and you’re no humpty dumpty
can a wall breach to contrivance?
feel like consensus collapsing?
well, you don’t value consensus
and i’m no citizen of the quorum
(and no one believes in democracy anyway
not anymore)

Tony,
There are personal borders keep our personhood inside and a larger one to keep unwanted things out. Walls are there to protect but not from everyone.
Thanks,

Thank you, Maria. Democracy is such a fragile thing and I sometimes wonder if too many of us take it for granted.

Thank you, Dolly. I long for a day when we can all just let our walls down.

Valid point. A wall blocks change in both directions.

Alas, it is so. I despair that it’s in our nature to keep erecting them.

Great self-awareness poetry. All I can say to a recalcitrant is: remember democracy means doing what everyone else wants. Democracy is a silent invisible wall.

Democracy is really the only thing that stops us all sliding into chaos. It ain’t perfect but I’d rather keep it.
