I am unjust, but I can strive for justice.
My life’s unkind, but I can vote for kindness.
I, the unloving, say life should be lovely.
I, that am blind, cry out against my blindness.
Man is a curious brute – he pets his fancies –
Fighting mankind, to win sweet luxury.
So he will be, tho’ law be clear as crystal,
Tho’ all men plan to live in harmony.
Come, let us vote against our human nature,
Crying to God in all the polling places
To heal our everlasting sinfulness
And make us sages with transfigured faces.

And so much pathos! I personally reject the notion that human nature is either “brutish” or “sinful.” Those are stories we have told ourselves (and continue to tell ourselves, if you are watching the “news”), and so we believe them. We can tell a different story, if we’re brave enough.

Camilla, I completely agree with you. The whole ‘sinful’ thing is especially damaging, I think, and has no place in any healthy society. I really like your take on this.

Yes, it’s swings and roundabouts really. Thanks for reading, Ajinkya!

Tony,
Life can be cruel and feel unjust but that isn’t real life, is it?
Thanks, Gary

Unfortunately, I think that’s true for a lot of people. There can often be awful circumstances that cannot be changed by simply having the ‘correct’ attitude about them. That’s just the lived reality for many. But I do take your point that there can also be good things in life too, no matter how small those might be for some.
