‘Le Jouet‘ is a 1976 French film directed by Francis Veber, and I thoroughly recommend you check it out. It’s about a boy who buys a man to be his new toy. I found it an engaging exploration of how basic respect for people should always be more important than money. That’s a message we surely need right now.

There was a movie here many years ago (maybe 80s or just into the 90s) that was a comedy called The Toy that kind of flopped at the box office. It wasn’t a horrible movie but it does get annoying watching a spoiled brat for about an hour and a half. There were obvious themes of respect and not treating people like things, but I think the public was expecting more laughs with the star Richard Pryor in it. It must have been the US version of Le Jouet. I miss the days of new and original ideas for films. I will look into this one.

I haven’t seen the Richard Pryor version, truth be told, but I’ve read that the original is far superior (which is often the case anyway). If you don’t mind contending with subtitles then I suspect that you may enjoy it!

I just checked and that version is available to rent or buy on Prime Video. As soon as March Madness tournaments for basketball are over I will see about watching it. Thanks Tony!
