During the Korean War, my wife sat on the ruble of their home with her little brother and begged for food. Americans always gave whatever they had in rations and water to get them through another day. During the Vietnam War, I was the only survivor in my graduating high school class that went to war full of patriotic pride. On the Vietnam memorial is the name of 17 of my extended family members. We foolishly believed and we paid dearly. In the first Gulf War, I saw tens of thousands of civilians perish from the indifference of the warring nations. During the conflicts that rose out of the dissolution of Yugoslavia, I saw the cruelest example of human nature. Nazi Germany and the Imperial Japanese were never so cruel to innocence as the peoples of this unremarkable land. And as if to prove me wrong, the deprivation and debauchery of the Islamic Fundamentalists rose like a cognate of Satan upon the Middle East in the Global War on Terror. Now, we dare to believe we can stop and irradicate the Iranian Theocracy, the birth mother of all the world’s terror and iniquity. Ukraine is perhaps the crowning moment of 80 years of conflict. They have suffered and there is no end in sight to their suffering, but they are unbowed by the abject evil that stalks them day and night. In all the previous examples above, Freedom lost the battle and evil was never vanquished. The collective soul of Ukraine will teach us what sacrifice truly means and set the example of what it looks like to hold the line against the demonic lust of evil.
