a hollow in time

its mind had slipped away
into a retronormative haze
that note was as vital today
as it e’er will be yesterday

i still craved to call it mother
the skin caving over bone
staring black through the core of me
ne’er could it known what it was alone

in my dreams she asks where i am
where am i while she is dying
subglacial in the suffering
palatial in her pain

fretting without absolution
for everything to be born again
but there was bark in the honey
& blood e’er in the trees & grain

tho’ time with it was nothing to me
ne’er could i bear take its hands
so i chose to dissemble in airless gloom
as forests desiccated to sand

in my dreams she asks where i am
where am i while she is dying
subglacial in the suffering
palatial in her pain

celestial in our infancy
all us skybound lust e’er for life
but the night my mother was dying
i slept too peacefully profound

(I should’ve been there in her final months but I couldn’t bear to witness what dementia had done to her mind and body. My Father was there. I think my Sister was there. I wasn’t. My Mother who had carried me. My Mother who’d taught me the beauty and value of kindness. I let her down by staying away, and now I have dreams where she’s still alive. She’s happy and full of years in the way she should always have been.)

i will always love you
mother, who carried me
it’s been a year since you’ve gone
i feel your smile lingering on
& i still don’t know why
you won’t let me lay down & cry

i miss you more now, it’s true
& still don’t know what i’m to do
guess i could pass your kindness on
instead of waiting for death erelong
for as long as i’ve left to live
i guess i’ll learn to let it be

‘don’t go near the frangipani tree’
this is what you would say to me
then i‘d try to be your good boy
won’t you let me cry now please

i never did learn to see you true
never did wonder if you felt rue
a lifetime of days before i was born
like petals fallen in the dawn
it feels like i hardly knew you
now i’m here too late… & waiting

& yet i will always love you
mother, who carried me
i miss you more each passing day
& now i find there’s less to say
with this vast space between us
i hope i was your good boy

‘don’t go near the frangipani tree’
this is what you would say to me
i don’t think your boy can smile any more
won’t somebody let me cry now please

TATI’s & TONY’s DEAD POET TOUR // A Vagabond Song. by Bliss Carman (William)

There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood–
Touch of manner, hint of mood;
And my heart is like a rhyme,
With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time.

The scarlet of the maples can shake me like a cry
Of bugles going by.
And my lonely spirit thrills
To see the frosty asters like a smoke upon the hills.

There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir;
We must rise and follow her,
When from every hill of flame
She calls and calls each vagabond by name.
