it’s winter but the wind is warm
like a giant’s hearth breathing
where is the forest’s ghost white shroud
where are the grand glaciers of old
when was the last time you heard the raven cry
when was the last time you saw the mirror smile
change is but a turning of tides
the lazy sky yawns and stretches
though swaddled in blankets of cloud
not even the rain shall fall
not even the earth shall swallow
when was the last time you heard the raven cry
when was the last time you saw the mirror smile
change is but a turning of tides
the trees slumber in dreams so fey
where the woodcutter loses his axe
dull all meaning with the seasons
dull the blade of understanding
when was the last time you heard the raven cry
when was the last time you saw the mirror smile
change is but a turning of tides

For some reason, I feel melancholic reading this. Maybe it’s the weather or maybe you two are just wonderful writers and poets. 🩵

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that it’s the latter, Maria! 😋

Definitely the latter 😉

Gotta say… that’s quite the relief! 😅

I liked your poem, but it doesn’t apply to us here on UK’s east coast. My little resort town seldom sees snow or frost, but this winter has been uncommonly severe. No ravens though. Plenty of crows causing bloody murder on my lawn!

I’ve always wondered what the difference is between crows and ravens. (I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that actually…) 😛

Crows, magpies, jays and ravens are all corvid… one family. But ravens have a more restricted distribution. There place here is taken by jackdaws (another corvid)

Ah, I see. Thank you, Crispina!

To be honest, they look the same to me!

Same here, Crispina, hence my ignorance on this subject! I honestly thought they were all just interchangeable names for the same bird!

The jay and magpie are definitely different. They have colour. The rest, they all look like crows to me! Jackdaw has a greyish head, that makes it easier to identify!

See? Even that I didn’t know, so thank you for educating me, Crispina!

Oh! Even the winter wind seems confused, opting for warmth over its chilly reputation. Perhaps it’s considering a career change to summer breeze? 🌬️🤔 But, on a more serious note, I agree that change is a natural part of life. Thanks for sharing this.

Tony,
Please smile, man in the mirror. It’s been a long time. Thanks, Gary

That is…well, it just is. I can’t think of a word. Awesome is used too much, and haphazardly. Awe inspiring comes close, but doesn’t seem quite right. I just don’t know the word for something that inspires thought, reflection, and emotions, with simultaneous admiration for wordsmithery.
