winter elegy

it’s winter but the wind is warm
like a giant’s hearth breathing
where is the forest’s ghost white shroud
where are the grand glaciers of old

when was the last time you heard the raven cry
when was the last time you saw the mirror smile
change is but a turning of tides

the lazy sky yawns and stretches
though swaddled in blankets of cloud
not even the rain shall fall
not even the earth shall swallow

when was the last time you heard the raven cry
when was the last time you saw the mirror smile
change is but a turning of tides

the trees slumber in dreams so fey
where the woodcutter loses his axe
dull all meaning with the seasons
dull the blade of understanding

when was the last time you heard the raven cry
when was the last time you saw the mirror smile
change is but a turning of tides

  1. I liked your poem, but it doesn’t apply to us here on UK’s east coast. My little resort town seldom sees snow or frost, but this winter has been uncommonly severe. No ravens though. Plenty of crows causing bloody murder on my lawn!

  2. Oh! Even the winter wind seems confused, opting for warmth over its chilly reputation. Perhaps it’s considering a career change to summer breeze? 🌬️🤔 But, on a more serious note, I agree that change is a natural part of life. Thanks for sharing this.

  3. That is…well, it just is. I can’t think of a word. Awesome is used too much, and haphazardly. Awe inspiring comes close, but doesn’t seem quite right. I just don’t know the word for something that inspires thought, reflection, and emotions, with simultaneous admiration for wordsmithery.
