desolation

i wish you were here
sunny cheeked & fond embrace
i wish you were whole
happy, loved & full of years
alert to now’s potential

all eyes turn away
scared of soaking up my tears
adding to my years

all souls melt away
scared of adding to their years
my desolation

airdrop for the pious

demon in sunlight
fragments of my low life have
hidden to be seen
in scratchings on the pavement
more picayunes for my purse

hiberheim

we swore allegiance to winter
in this ice sanctuary
where snowfall whirls
in its ritualistic dance

we swore allegiance to winter
and fell asleep in euphoria
let our bodies turn into
fragile white materials

applied philosophy

the humanist and the quietist
walked along the beach
and had a respectful dispute
about freedom of speech

their plimsolls were leaving traces
on the golden sand
the evening sun embraced them
and everything felt grand

they had time to puff on their pipes
about once or twice
before their wives distracted them
with asking for advice

their children’s wedding was pretty soon
and all was mess and froth
on top of that, the wives couldn’t agree
on the colour of the tablecloth

an hour of scandal, some broken plates
torn shreds of hair and squeal
that moment the phrase ‘freedom of speech’
seemed absurd and unreal

the humanist and the quietist
miraculously survived
but their philosophical views
were now very much deprived

udderly stellar

once upon a time
one professional dairymaid
lost her temper
and abandoned her job
(if you’ve ever had a repulsive boss
you would understand)

she walked down the road
and saw a lightning flash
this was her awakening
and a new job offer

now she is a lead
in the milky way dairy
looks after the galaxy’s cows
expresses star milk
and never raises her voice
to juniors and colleagues
